HD VMD to Battle Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD

August 8, 2007 by Doug · View Comments

New Medium Enterprises introduced a new Hi-Def format to compete against HD-DVD and Blu-ray at the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association trade show in Denver.

The new format uses the same red laser currently used to create standard DVD’s instead of the newer blue laser used by HD-DVD and Blu-ray disks. New drives are said to be available next month at at retailers Amazon and Radio shack for a suggest price of around $150.

HD VMD discs hold up to 30GB on a single side, are encoded with a maximum bit rate of 40 megabits per second. At present, it uses the MPEG-2 and VC1 video formats to encode at 1080p resolution, and will possibly move to h.264 format in the future.
